Netflix to release new comedy specials every week through the rest of 2017 including new specials from Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld, and Dave Chappelle.
Netflix is trying to take stand-up comedy specials to the next level. According to a report from The Verge, Netflix is planning to release at least one new stand-up comedy special from March to the of the year in 2017.
Over the last few weeks, we have seen new specials from Trevor Noah and Mike Birbiglia, and we know new specials from Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Louis C.K., and more great comics are on the way this year. Schumer and Chappelle are releasing new specials in March.
If you are a stand-up comedian, now is the time to get in line for a stand-up comedy special with Netflix. The Verge report said Netflix is offering top comedians $10-$20 million per new special, while lower level comics are offered between $3 million and $10 million per special.
With Netflix going all out on stand-up comedy, this is really good for stand-up comedy and the stand-up special scene. If HBO and Comedy Central want to hold any piece of the pie when it comes to stand-up comedy, they are going to increase their output to compete in this market. If they do that, we are going to be seeing a ton of stand-up comedy specials coming out for the next few years. As a fan of the art, I’m incredibly excited about the volume of new specials hitting the air and streaming services.
We don’t know the release dates for many of the stand-up specials yet. We know Amy Schumer’s special, which is called Leather Special, will it the streaming service on Tuesday, March 7. Netflix is also releasing two of Dave Chappelle’s specials on Friday, March 24.
We will let you know the other stand-up comedy release dates when we find out!
